The Abhiruchi Institute of Physical Education (AIPE) stands as a pioneering force in the realm of sports and physical education in Northeast India. Established with the vision of creating a strong foundation for scientific sports training and education, AIPE is the first dedicated physical education institution in the region — a dream realized by its illustrious founder, Shri Balendra Mohan Chakravarty.
A renowned sports journalist, educationist, and passionate advocate for grassroots sports, Balendra Mohan Chakravarty is widely regarded as the flag bearer of physical education in Assam. He was the founder of Abhiruchi, Assam’s first sports magazine, and the driving force behind the launch of Abhiruchi Sports Day in 1984 — an annual celebration of sporting excellence marking the Birthday of First Arjuna Awardee from North East Shri Bhogewsar Baruah. His lifelong dedication to empowering youth through sports led to the founding of AIPE in 2008, with the aim of nurturing talent, fostering discipline, and bridging the gap between athletes and academic opportunity.
Established in 2008 under the aegis of Abhiruchi, a registered NGO dedicated to promoting sports in Assam, the Abhiruchi Institute of Physical Education (AIPE) is the first institution in the state to offer specialized higher education in physical education.
AIPE is registered under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 (No. 2975 of 1988-89) and has received approval from the Education Department, Government of Assam. The institute is affiliated to Gauhati University, which has granted permission to offer:
● B.P.Ed. (Bachelor of Physical Education) – 2-year program
● B.P.E.S. (Bachelor of Physical Education & Sports) – 4-year program
Additionally, the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), has recognized AIPE to conduct the B.P.Ed. course with an intake capacity of 100 students.
Today, AIPE operates from its campuses in Chandrapur and Kerakuchi, Guwahati, offering specialized programs in physical education and sports sciences. Our courses are designed to prepare future educators, trainers, coaches, and administrators who can lead the nation toward a healthier and more active future.
Our faculty includes experienced educators and national-level sportspersons who mentor students through rigorous academic and practical training. Beyond classrooms, students participate in real-world events, outreach activities, and sports competitions that develop leadership, teamwork, and character.

To empower students with theoretical expertise, practical skills, and leadership abilities in physical education and sports, preparing them for diverse career opportunities in teaching, coaching, sports management, and fitness industries. The objectives of the Institute is to generate professional leaders in the fields of Physical Education & Sports Science and Yoga Education.
The organisation has to its credit as many as one hundred and four units scattered in different parts of Assam. It has been observing the 3rd of September as the 'Abhiruchi Sports Day' since 1984 to mark the birth anniversary of 'ARJUN' SRI BHOGESWAR BARUA, the legendary sportsperson of Assam, throughout the state with various programmes to create awareness among the public in general and student community in particular about the role of games and sports. In addition, the Assamese sports monthly titled 'ABHIRUCHI' is being published since 1979 to enthuse the young sports talents of the state of Assam.
